I had a chat with Gregory Wilson today and he has offered the following statement in regards to Freakey. This is classic Wilson, a pro till the end always wanting to please. If you haven’t ordered, you can get all of Greg’s DVD’s and Freakey here.

Firstly, I must thank everyone who is still interested in Freakey. I have put a LOT of time, attention and expense into making this the very best product it could possibly be. Personally, I think it will be worth the wait and anguish.

Now, onto the much-need and HUGE apology in two parts:
A) For the numerous delays.
B) For not communicating with everyone who prepaid me
directly through Pay Pal.

Many of you I had made contact with but others got slipped between the cracks due to the terrible timing of a craaaaaaazy busy work schedule around the world.

The countless reasons for its delay will only bore you and sound like inconsequential excuses, so let me just say that it is finally available and I appreciate your patience. For those of you who weren’t so patient I completely understand, as I have not been around to keep you apprised.

As some of you know, a temporary version of Freakey was available at the Blackpool convention a couple of months ago. But since then, the slipcover and menus were completely overhauled creating a much better look.

Unfortunately, because of Blackpool, the dealers mistakenly thought it was available and had prematurely advertised it. They never asked me about its release in America and took it upon themselves to take pre-orders without my approval or agreement. For all they knew, I would release it on my own like John Carney or John Kennedy.

To compound matters, I took out a full-page ad in Magic magazine, which makes it look like I was skimming the cream of retail sales before the dealers got it. The problem was one of timing. I completely misjudged the completion of the project by way of the graphic artist, the web designer, the replication of the DVD’s and the videographer who revamped the menus.

And because the web designer wasn’t ready either, I’m sure I lost more than a few sales as interested prospects simply stared incredulously at a web site in park position only. Arrggghhh!

Frustratingly, it was like being a general trying to command his scattered and oftentimes unavailable troops FROM ANOTHER COUNTRY. I was pulling out what little hair I have left!

Yes, Freakey was available for MAGIC Live ONE DAY before I attended the convention. Getting to that finish line was also an arduous and strenuous task and couldn’t have been done by only myself. So please don’t think that I’ve had Freakey finished for an inordinate length of time and holding out on anyone. I’m not that evil.

You can buy it directly from me at gregorywilsonfx.com now or from your favorite dealer very soon. I will be getting them to Murphy’s Magic by the end of the week.

I have friends around the country who have informed me of the numerous complaints and burning effigies in my honor. So all I can say is that I understand and hope you’ll forgive me—especially if you gain as much satisfaction from Freakey as I have over the last few years with my own personal set.

My lesson in releasing future products is painfully and profoundly emblazoned in memory bank forever. Sorry that each and every one of you had to be the teachers.

I told you that the details will only bore you. : )

Your beaten and battered servant,

Gregory Wilson

Greg will be partnering with Mirus Magic on some future podcasts and interviews focusing around the Magic Arts, performance and all around magicianship! Stay tuned for a way to be involved.

Recently in San Francisco the Mirus Magic team witnessed a phenomenon that is very prevalent in the Magic Arts. EVERYONE wants to be a master magician like Jay Sankey, Blaine (lightly), and Greg Wilson, but no one really wants to put the wood shed time in to make their skills worth a performance.

This phenomenon I refer to is the magician who purchases ton of merchandise and then doesn’t care to hone his or her skills to get better. It’s almost like most people want a push-button magic trick that does all the work.

Personally, the better the sleight and the more time in the performance can make or break an effect. Most aspiring magicians just like to fire the finale as soon as possible. It’s the anticipation that makes this a true ‘Art’.

Derren Brown states that he realized that ‘one’ good illusion in the minds of someone 20 years from now who still remembers you and your performance is better than 100 great ones that just fly by. (Paraphrased Of Course)

You see this all the time with magicians who are really artists. Guys like Gregory Wilson are super stars when it comes to walk-around and street magic. This guy has been a favorite of mine for many years. He can do magic with a pile of spare change, one card and napkins. This type of magic is silly if it weren’t for the incredible style and patter of Greg.

He builds rapport, creates emotion and invents suspense in the mind of the participant. Being able to just have fun in the process of doing magic is the ‘key’ to successful Magic Arts Performance. Greg’s Freakey Performance is a ‘key’ - no pun intended - example of his style and the way a magician can really do magic!

So the next time you decide to just ’show a magic trick’ think again and bring the spectator on a ride of wonderful emotions. I’ll go over some tips on street performance in the near future.

Just so you know, we have scoured the globe finding the best of the best for magic tricks over at Mirus Magic Store. You won’t find tons of ads and sales gimmicks on our blog, but you will find true ‘naked’ confessions of our magicians and their thoughts about certain effects among other things.

Take a minute to give us your thoughts as to what the Magic Arts really need as we are beginning to develop a line of DVD’s for our institute of learning for the Magic Arts. Some original effects are coming down the pike as well so we really need to hear from you.

Just an interesting fact about Mirus Magic and its associates: Our premier magicians are sometimes younger than the rest of the ‘crew’ you might find in this industry. One of our featured magicians is only 17 and still in high school, so keep your eyes and ears peeled as we introduce some old and some young Magic Arts Professionals. As a matter of fact, he is the brain-child behind some of our newest endeavors!

As a fan of Greg Wilson, I am always amazed at the quality of his work. Whether it’s walk around or street magic, or just plain fun with an ink pen, Greg hits a home run every time.

Well, it has finally happened, Greg has designed his FIRST effect. This ‘realistic’ and practical version of copper / silver using keys is a pure home run! No kidding!

As an avid coin magician and a 26 year veteran in the Magic Arts, I have seen many effects, but this one is certainly one of my favorites. There are not many places that have this available at this time and according to most dealers, it is going to be scarce, but here is a great place to start placing your orders for this great effect at a discounted price no doubt!

If you like working in close up magic, if you like Greg Wilson or if you just like to blow people’s mind, this is an effect for you!

I would love to hear other’s opinions on it.

Mirus is a proud supplier of some of the best coin effects in the world, Johnson Precision Magic Products. Although you may find other coin effects, for the passionate coin worker, we are proud to offer the Johnson products and elite training for these effects.

One of our most favorite sets is the Johnson Hopping Half. This effect takes your coin work to another level by giving you tools that you can use for hundreds of coin routines for years to come. I personally use two sets of Johnson Magic Hopping Halves in my coin routines of which one of them is over 90 minutes and keeps people locked in to my every word and move.

If you like coins and close up magic, this is a set that you need to have. There are other versions of the Hopping Half that are less expensive and these versions will allow the standard hopping half routine, but don’t offer the ‘extra’ coin working benefits that the Johnson Hopping Half offers.

So if you are wondering which set to buy, you need to ask a few questions:

What is my budget? For a magician who is just getting started and wants some coin magic they might choose a less expensive hopping half set. It will give you strong reactions for years to come and if you buy them from Mirus Magic Store, you can rest assured we only carry quality products that we ’stand’ behind. We also don’t recommend or provide products that our magicians do not personally use, and that is the truth. If you want to work with coins and you have the budget, get the Johnson set.

What is my forte? In other words, what am I best at doing? Am I a true coin worker? If you are or you inspire to be. Work to get a set of coins that are versatile.

I’ll be reviewing a few more of the Johnson Effects over the next few weeks, so stay tuned and subscribe. If you have questions on certain products, ask and we’ll be sure to answer. We have investigated and used thousands of effects, read hundreds of books and watched endless hours of film on the Magic Arts in order to provide you and other magicians with the best review possible.

Keep the Magic Arts Alive and keep showing off! Just keep the secret :)

This is a fantastic version of Cups and Balls with Glass. Latimer does a wonderful job with his presentation. Follow his hands and his face. He is ALWAYS connected with his audience no matter what. Sometimes magicians want to ‘watch’ their own effects to the detriment of the audience.

Again a wonderful performance.

Check out our magic supplies and effects at the Mirus Magic Store.

John does a great routine with the cups and balls, a classic in the Magic Arts. There is a lot to learn from a guy like this and how he works his crowd.

If you know the secret behind this effect you appreciate his performance even more. Enjoy and get your own set of Cups and Balls at Mirus Magic Store.

Coins or Cards?

By: James
Jul 2nd

An age old dilemma for some magicians. Am I going to be a coin or card worker. Well, the honest answer is both. Every good magician knows how to work with coins and cards, but as a magician, you will have a preference.

For instance, people like Daryll love cards and Troy Hooser loves coins but there are those like Jay Sankey who is a master at both. Deciding your flavor will depend totally on your interest and at which effects you are most talented.

I personally favor coin magic for several reasons:

1. Everyone has coins in their pockets or purses, so it seems natural to work with them.
2. Coins are fascinating and pack lightly (especially gimmicks or utilities)
3. They are durable. Some of the coins I have worked with for over 20 years, the same one.
4. They are interchangeable. They can be used together for different effects.
5. Coins move into Money Magic. When you have done a series of coin effects, you can then move into folded money and other small effects that work well together.

Although there are many reasons to work with coins, you must decide how you ‘deal’ with cards. I encourage all magicians to be able to do card magic as well on a basic level because it is just natural to do a card trick as a magician and people expect you to be able to do them.

No matter what you do, take the time to work on the effects that you enjoy and become a master at them. They will bring you and others great joy for years to come.

Real Magic?

By: James
Jun 29th

How can there be ‘real’ magic? It all depends on how you look at things. Magic is the art of believing what you did not see. It’s almost like having faith and with faith, you have hope. So in our minds and hearts, we want to give the world hope. Now you may be saying, “What a silly dream. How can you do this?” Well, we can’t. But we can start. Having something to believe in is essential in life. Believing that each of us has a purpose and gifts is necessary for existence. Just maybe the Magic Art of Illusions can be your start.

I have been doing magic since I was five years old and it has been a great part of my life and ‘who’ I am. Part of my joy is to share it with others.

SO… How does this work?

It’s not an easy task, but we at Mirus (mirus : wonderful, astonishing, extraordinary. Latin) Strive to touch the abstract of life by offering entertainment, intrigue and astonishment through illusions.

Our biggest dream is to teach others who want to learn. Why learn magic? Well, despite what some think, it’s bigger than uncle Jo pulling a quarter out of your ear at family reunions. Much bigger.

Magic can build confidence, spark conversations that lead to great relationships and most importantly, it is a wonderful art for the mind. Thinking and interacting with people will always improve life for you and others. Learning and performing magic will help you understand how people think, live and learn.

What are you waiting for, let’s help you. Whether you are wanting to learn a trick or two, stock up on supplies or really be trained, we are your place.

Oh, you can also book superb magicians for your events and locations. Just navigate and if you can’t find what you want or need or just want to say hi, send us an email at hey@nospam.mirusmagic.com (remove the nospam. portion)

Beginning Magic

By: James
Jun 24th

Ever thought about starting with magic? Do you have a child or friend who is looking to get started? It seems no matter where you look there are hundreds of sites and stores wanting to sell you 101 tricks you can do with NO SKILL REQUIRED.

The truth of the matter is that no matter what kind of magic you purchase, you are going to have to work at your handling and presentation. Even the easiest of illusions require some skill in these areas. So go ahead and make up your mind as an amature or beginner magician that you are going to have to take time in the wood shed practicing.

Consider the ‘kits’ that you could purchase as well. There are many great kits out there but there are a few ‘essentials’ that need to be in a kit. Watch out for the pricey kits as well. Just because they cost money, doesn’t mean they’ll be any good. I speak from experience. I purchased a high-dollar magic kit years ago and discovered that I had each prop contained within and my individual items were better quality than the kit contents.

When looking for a kit you should also consider the age and true level of interest that you (or another) may have in the art of illusion. Some tricks require weeks and even months to perfect while others can be performed in a matter of hours. When they say there are 200 tricks in the kit, you might as well get ready to perform 28 different tricks with a string and 13 different tricks with a quarter. I guess you could pull a coin from every orifice on the body. Just kidding.

Enough of the chatter. Go vanish something and if you want some help or advice on finding a good magic kit or some good illusions for any age or skill, let me know; I’ll be glad to connect you with some folks who can help you out.

If you have any suggestions on this topic or others on this site, please create a free user name and let’s hear them.
